Upon receiving free flowers they all smiled. The gift of flowers is something all people enjoy regardless of age. This is something I have always believed but did not know if it held true for most other people. In light of this notion, I decided to do my own little experiment and pass out free flowers to strangers downtown. The results of this experience did not surprise me but proved to be more enriching than I initially thought they would be. Though some people did not take a flower they still seemed happy that they were offered.
The emotional impact of flowers is positive to all people, making them perfect for any event or occasion. They emanate life and beauty in the most intrinsic form. After seeing these positive reactions from complete strangers my mood also became more cheery and contented. Turns out that these results are actually scientifically backed through Rutgers Research, which outlines the basic emotional impact of flowers as:
- Flowers have an immediate impact on happiness. Study participants expressed “true” or “excited” smiles upon receiving flowers, demonstrating extraordinary delight and gratitude. This reaction was universal, occurring in all age groups.
- Flowers have a long-term positive effect on moods. Specifically, study participants reported feeling less depressed, anxious and agitated after receiving flowers, and demonstrated a higher sense of enjoyment and life satisfaction.
- Flowers make intimate connections. The presence of flowers led to increased contact with family and friends.
- Flowers are a symbol for sharing. The study explored where in their homes people display flowers. Once received, arrangements were placed in areas of the home that are open to visitors – such as foyers, living rooms, and dining rooms – suggesting that flowers make the space more welcoming and create a sharing atmosphere.
These results speak for themselves! This groundbreaking epiphany as to why I like flowers has now come full circle (I know, I know not as complex as it seems but still pretty cool). Not only did this experience show me the value of flowers but also enriched my personal experience. I personally think flowers are pivotal to any event and home — and I am even more passionate about that after going through this process!
