Romantic, Scottish Wedding At The Lake In Michigan

Courtney Clouse (Bride) Shelbyville, MI
I have always been a creative person and I am also a wedding photographer so when it came time for OUR wedding, I had so many ideas to sift through during the planning process to find the vision for our day! I have always loved flowers and I love those weddings where there are flowers on every surface! But as a bride, I knew we would not be able to get the type of flowers we wanted by hiring a professional florist. The type of flowers we wanted and the expertise would have been way outside of our budget. I decided that instead, I would learn as much as I could about flowers and would arrange the flowers myself! We also knew we weren't going to be creating a ton of arrangements and/or bouquets. ... . . I had three bridesmaids bouquets, my bridal bouquet, 2 ceremony arrangements, and then a bunch of small vases and arrangements scattered throughout the space. No boutonnieres, no corsages, and no big centerpieces for the guest tables. We felt like our bouquets were the most important since they would be photographed the most throughout the day (mine especially), and that all the other flowers would be minimal since our guests would be talking or dancing, not worrying about the centerpieces! So that's where I focused most of my time! I watched a ton of videos on YouTube and actually attended a local florist's arranging class to get some experience. During this time is also when I found FiftyFlowers! I wanted to test out the preparation process in advance to the wedding day, so I placed an order for white roses for my bridal shower! I got to see how the shipping process worked and have a chance to process the flowers in a trial run before the wedding which was a big help for me! Plus, I then had beautiful flowers for my bridal shower! I LOVED the whole process!! I knew it was a big DIY to take on as a bride and you definitely need people to help you (it's more fun when it's collaborative anyway!), but I wouldn't have done it any other way! I have so much pride now when I think about all our flowers and seeing my vision come to life was simply amazing!! If I had to describe our wedding day with one word it would be magical! Everything and everyone was so beautiful and delightful in such a way as it seemed removed from everyday life. Our wedding day was such an emotional and joyful day and it will be a day we keep reliving in our minds for years to come! Show more

Flowers Used for Courtney Clouse's Arrangements

Red Rose Petals ( 3,000 Rose Petals )

Used for: Other

We used these at our wedding ceremony! We placed all the petals into paper cones for our guests to toss as we made our way back down the aisle as husband and wife. I kept all the petals in their bags and in the shipping box and kept them in a cool, dark room until the last possible minute. There were more than enough for 100 petal toss cones and extras for some portraits! They stayed fresh for the 3 days prior to the wedding and some of the extras stayed fresh for a whole extra week after as well.

I loved these carnations and although I was initially worried they wouldn't open up in time for the wedding, they were the perfect transitional shade for all the bouquets! I think the peach was neutral enough to be between the other reds, pinks, greens, and white blooms in all the arrangements. These flowers are also very sturdy and were easy to care for in the preparation stage! I had more than enough and ended up using extra stems throughout our reception venue as small accent flowers placed on different tables and surfaces.

White Freesia Flower ( 5 Bunches )

Used for: Bridal Bouquet, Bridesmaid's Bouquets , Other

I really loved these flowers and how they added height to my bridal bouquet and the bridesmaids bouquets' as well as the two ceremony arrangements! After a day of drinking water, they opened up and revealed a lovely pop of yellow. I used these as a neutral in between some of my more dramatic colors and I liked the shape of these buds as a contrast to the denser roses I used in the bouquets. They also seemed to have a classic element about them and I found them to be sturdy while we arranged our flowers the night before my wedding.

We ended up having tons and tons of this stuff and I ended up using it not only as filler in the bouquets but scattered around our reception venue. There were some that had some brown and yellowing spots, but again we had so much that it didn't matter discarding a few stems altogether. A really easy green to care for and they were hardy - lasted days and days after the wedding!

Since I was going to be using 2 different types of garden roses in my bouquets, I wanted to add in an additional rose type that had the more classic swirl vs. frill like in the garden ones and these quicksand roses fit the bill perfectly! They added a different "pattern" to my arrangements that the other blooms didn't and I found the cream color (although it seems kind of like a grayish-cream to me) was a great transitional color between all the other colors I had going on in my arrangements! I also used a lot of these roses in the small side table arrangements (guest book table, bar, cake table) and in the 5 cocktail table arrangements in groups of threes and they looked beautiful and classic grouped together! I was worried at first when I was preparing them as they do have a bit of a green undertone on the outer petals, but it was less noticeable once everything was arranged.

This made up the majority of the greenery filler in the bridal bouquet, the bridesmaid's bouquets, the 2 ceremony arrangements, the 5 small cocktail table vases, the 2 small guestbook table vases, and the centerpieces at all 9 of my guest's tables. I loved the texture and the variety of green and blue-greens of the seeded eucalyptus for all of these areas! I also ended up making two mini garlands with these, one for our welcome sign and one for our seating chart and draped them on top! Just FYI, they were pretty easy to prep and care for, but they did drop a lot of seeds during travel and during the arranging, but it wasn't noticeable in the least! They also have a faint scent, but I didn't mind it at all!

Thistle Blue Flower ( 50 stems )

Used for: Centerpieces , Bridal Bouquet, Bridesmaid's Bouquets , Other

Since we were incorporating some Scottish elements into our wedding day, the blue thistle was the perfect addition to our flower arrangements! These stems brought height and texture to the bouquets and side table arrangements and added a subtle pop of blue which helped incorporate all our wedding colors into the bouquets without being too over the top. We had quite a bit extra of these (each stem has 4-5 flower buds on it!) so we ended up placing one bud at each place setting with the individual menus and I really loved that extra touch since our centerpieces were very minimal. These were really easy to care for and lasted days and days. They can be a little "thorny" feeling but not super sharp - just an FYI.

I loved these carnations and although I was initially worried they wouldn't open up in time for the wedding, they were the perfect transitional shade for all the bouquets and the 2 ceremony arrangements! I think the pink and white combination was the perfect balance to be the other really dramatic roses, reds, and pinks in all the arrangements. These flowers are also very sturdy and were easy to care for in the preparation stage! I had more than enough and ended up using extra stems throughout our reception venue as small accent flowers placed on different tables and surfaces.

THESE WERE MY FAVORITE FLOWERS!! I absolutely lovelovelove these peachy, watermelon ranunculus and I could not keep my eyes off of them during my whole prep and arranging process. The range of colors is so breathtaking and the flowers themselves just seem so feminine to me! They were show-stoppers in all of our bouquets, the 2 ceremony arrangements, and I also grouped them together loosely on different surfaces and tables throughout our wedding reception! I got a good mixture of pinks, yellows, and orangey-pinks and they added so much visual interest and variety to our arrangements. I want to have these in my house all the time now! Out of all our flowers, these were the most delicate, but they are not so delicate that you'll need to wire them (at least I didn't find the need to as the stems stayed strong under the weight of the buds).

Garden Rose Red Velvet ( 36 Garden Roses )

Used for: Centerpieces , Bridal Bouquet, Other

These are the epitome of romantic! I knew I wanted to use a pop of red in my bridal bouquet only (not the bridesmaid's bouquets) because it would incorporate some interest, it would differentiate my bouquet from the others, it added romance, and it would also tie my flowers in with my classic, red lipstick that I planned to have on the day of my wedding! These roses reminded me of the type of rose you'd expect to see from the Phantom of the Opera or the like and were a bit darker on the outer edges (which I loved). These were delicate but didn't give me too much trouble and they added wonderful texture to my bouquet! We also placed about 10 of these inside our head table's seeded eucalyptus garland that ran the length of the head table of 16 feet. I also place 1 rose per guest table (9 total) in a bud vase along with a bunch of greenery and candles for our centerpieces.

Paper White Garden Rose ( 36 Garden Roses )

Used for: Bridal Bouquet, Bridesmaid's Bouquets , Other

These were such beautiful flowers!! These roses were the perfect romantic white rose and I used them in all of the bouquets, the 2 ceremony arrangements, and in some of the side table arrangements (cocktail tables/bar/etc.). They are definitely a big bloom and were a good size balance to the other roses and carnations I had. The white color was classic and timeless and was the perfect visual transition between some of the more dramatic colored blooms I also used.

We ended up using this garland down the length of our head table which was 16 feet long! Upon arrival, all I did was mist the greenery with water while it was still in the shipping box and then closed it again. I left it in a cool, dark room in our home (misting every day) until the day of the wedding and then placed it on the head table a few hours prior to the ceremony. The greens held up really well and it was the perfect arrangement for our head table! We also placed the red garden roses into the garland and had candles traveling down the length of the head table next to the garland.
