Vintage Autumn Garden Wedding In Kentucky

Lauren Fraley (Bride) LEXINGTON, KY
When my boyfriend and best friend of 4 years proposed to me in June of 2017 and I began the tedious and overwhelming process of wedding planning, I knew two things for certain: I wanted to design the invitation suite AND make all of the flower arrangements myself. As a landscape architect working in Atlanta, and having grown up on a farm in the Kentucky Bluegrass Region - I have a complete obsession with flowers and sometimes daydream of starting up my own greenhouses and floral design business. Growing up a "flower child," I was always picking flowers from other people's gardens and foraging for wildflowers and "weeds" on our farm to create a mini fairy garden (way before they became a thing) ... or a flower crown and necklace and so forth... But I had never attempted to make professional-looking, Pinterest-worthy arrangements and knew if I wanted it to turn out the way I was envisioning in my artsy-fartsy head that I would have to really dig in and do some research. I'll admit that I spent more time designing these arrangements than I did planning everything else -- in fact, I knew I was going to order our flowers from Fifty Flowers before we even selected our venue! For the entire year and a half we were engaged, I poured over every. single. flower on the FiftyFlowers website - looking at the care/longevity, reading reviews and other flower stories, and even what the flowers symbolized! I would create image boards with all of the flowers I was interested in, which was A LOT, and worked hard to curate them to find the right balance of moody, autumn, unique texture, and drama I was looking for. I also went so far as to use the same flowers and berries that I had illustrated in a hand-drawn floral illustration for the invitation suite. And through all of the iterations and obsessive-compulsive flower shopping, I wouldn't change a single thing about the flowers I chose and ordering from FiftyFlowers was super easy, saved a lot of money, and in the crunch-time of processing and assembling the arrangements, FiftyFlowers provided me with superb customer service. My fiance (now husband) Charles and I drove from Atlanta to my parents' place in Kentucky the Wednesday before the wedding so that we would be able to handle the flowers upon immediate arrival the following day. I have never run so fast to meet a delivery truck. That was how excited I was for the flowers to arrive! Nearly all of the flowers arrived on Thursday, with the exception of the Astrantia, Cosmos, and Freesia which were slightly delayed. Processing everything took a bit longer than anticipated, primarily the amaranthus due to their chewy-looking leaves that I insisted needed to be removed. Luckily, for the processing AND arranging process, I had the most amazing help - Charles, my mom, my sister, two of my aunts, and two of my cousins all lent a hand throughout the rather intense floral arranging session. One of my aunts even went foraging on our farm to find some really cool branches, greenery, and seed-heads to add to the centerpieces, which complimented everything so well and brought a bit of "home" into the arrangements. My favorite part of the whole thing was building my bridal bouquet at 2 AM Saturday morning with my mom and fiance keeping me company while I worked relentlessly on the three bridesmaid bouquets and then my own which practically swallowed me! At one point my bridal bouquet became too big and heavy for me to hold while continuing to build it (and add zip-ties periodically) that I had to get my mom to hold it so I could run from bucket to bucket and grab additional flowers. She kept asking "so is that the last flower? It's already really big, people won't be able to see you behind it!" and "I think it's done..." hinting that I should call it a night. I knew I wanted a huge, cascading statement bouquet and I truly think I achieved the look I was going for! Admittedly, it was heavy and impossible to hold with one hand (oh how I wish I had weighted it!), but I completely loved it! Both the boutonnieres and flower crown (for my 3-year-old flower girl) were assembled the morning of our wedding while I had a million curlers in my hair and in between getting makeup applied. Luckily I watched a lot of youtube videos and read numerous blogs and articles on how to assemble both, and it was so much easier than I expected! I'm so excited that all of the hard work and flower-planning paid off, for I am still head-over-heels for our wedding arrangements! I may even get to do this again someday for my cousins who helped with my wedding - and if that's the case I know exactly where I'll be getting the flowers!!! ;) Show more

These only lose a star because of two reasons: 1 - they were thorny little guys and 2 - they didn't last as long as I would have liked. Otherwise, LOVE the vintage garden look they added, and the clusters of cream with golden centers were the perfect offset to the deep moody tones of the arrangements. They were also perfect to use for the boutonnieres!

Chocolate Cosmos Flower ( 10 bunches )

Even though these were delayed an entire day, they arrived looking only a bit wilty and perked up within an hour of being in water! I absolutely loved the deep, moody color and whimsy these added to the arrangements - even though they are small, they make a huge statement!

These were so perfect (and easy!) to pop in to all of the arrangements, from the boutonnieres and flower crown to the bridal bouquet and centerpieces - they added the perfect amount of mauve/lavender tone and wildflower look to really balance out the arrangements. They held up really well and also dry beautifully!

I kept going back and forth, literally for months, on my flower order - and this was one that kept getting added or removed simply because of whatever mood I was in... and in the end I am SO SO glad I was in a freesia kind-of mood! These were so gorgeous, super sturdy/hardy, smelled amazing, and their form/bloom habit was unlike anything else in the arrangements! I also really loved the un-bloomed freesia and used them for added texture!

Easy. Autumn. Texture. Enough said... except really, I can't help but jabber on about all of these amazing flowers, and this wonderful filler was no exception! It was so much more than a filler flower, it reminded me of my family farm where I grew up and the variations in tone were so delicious! I only wish I had ordered double the amount, I definitely would have used it!

Oh how I love Ranunculus! Even just the name makes me happy! The dense petals, dramatic deep burgundy-violet, and curvy stems were just amazing. I may have ordered more than I needed, but that was probably for the best, as we had some stems break and bend in transporting the flowers to the venue, so we quickly replaced them with fresh ones! I will say, sticking ranunculus stems into the floral foam proved to be a bit of a challenge and took some practice! Also - for anyone else who decides to use these (which you totally should!) - make sure to have some sturdy metal wire on hand... since the stems are hollow you can thread wire up the stem to make them straighter or just a little more upright. I loved the ranunculus buds too - they were perfect for the boutonnieres!

Gosh where do I start with these beauties!? First, the only two (minor) negatives would be that they wilted slightly and took a long time to process (as mentioned with the bronze amaranthus) -- but these completely made up for that with the statement they made - they truly stole the show! I love the autumn burgundy tones and velvety texture - so many guests asked about this flower in particular because it isn't just dramatic, it brings a bit of curiosity!

The only reason I'm giving these lovelies 4 stars is due to their very short stems. Which really isn't fair because short flowers need love too! Truth is that I struggled finding homes for them in the arrangements - especially my gigantic bridal bouquet because their short stems made it hard to get them in the middle of arrangements. That being said, their huge, unique and eye-catching gem-tones blooms make up for it all! Even though they were stuck in around the edges of the centerpieces and the bouquets, they were still front and center! Also, they were surprisingly hardy!

I'm so glad I ordered these -- and even more glad that I popped them in the refrigerator to keep them fresh until the day of the wedding! I may have gone texture-overboard with my flower selections, but I wanted something super unique with a lot of moody-autumn vibes, and these definitely helped complete the look! These stayed fresh longer than any of the other flowers - nearly two and a half weeks! I think it was the refrigeration that did it. :) OH one more thing, I love that Fifty Flowers sent these with little plastic tubes around the stems! It made them stay upright and more sturdy.

Fern and Ivy Greens Garland ( 25 Foot Fern and Ivy Greens Garland )

We used this on the bridal party table and it was simply perfect! We didn't need to add anything to it (I'll admit I thought about it, but it was at the bottom of the to-do list on our very busy day). It held up extremely well too! I think it only needed some misting to perk it up but was otherwise the easiest floral decor element of the day!

These are completely bombproof! I knew I HAD to use these exact hypericum berries in the arrangements because they were in the hand-drawn floral illustration I did for the invitation suite (also DIY), and I knew they would tie it all together! They were really fun to work with and elevated the autumn-vibe we were going for!

The richness of color and texture that the bronze amaranthus brought to the arrangements was absolutely perfect. I will say that they are SO much better looking in person than the pictures online and have a vibrant copper tone. Both of the amaranthus (bronze and red) required a bit more processing time because I pulled off all of the leaves since they had a chewy appearance. We had a hotter than expected wedding day, and because of that these wilted just a bit by the end of everything - but I would order them again in a heartbeat!
