Caring for Your Gerberas

Our flowers are shipped fresh directly from our farms to your doorstep. When you first open the box, your flowers might appear "sleepy" or "thirsty," which is completely normal. These flowers have just completed an international journey and need water. Following the important care and preparation steps below will help rehydrate them and ensure they last as long as possible.

Flower Care Steps – From Arrival to Arrangement

Step 1: Unpack and Inspect

  • Unpack and Inspect: Cut any straps to remove flowers from the box, but leave their protective packaging on for the first 4 hours of hydration. As you unpack, check your blooms for any visible concerns.

  • Process Immediately: Begin the steps below immediately upon opening the box to ensure your flowers rehydrate and recover from their journey. Again, don’t worry if they appear sleepy or thirsty—they will perk up beautifully with proper care.

Step 2: Prepare the Containers

  • Choose Clean Buckets or Vases: Ensure your containers are clean and sanitized to remove soap residue, bacteria, and dirt, which can shorten flower life.

  • Fill Containers: Add at least 4 inches of cool, fresh water, and mix in flower food if available.

Step 3: Trim and Place in Water

  • Remove Foliage Below the Waterline: Strip leaves that will fall below the waterline to prevent mold or bacteria growth.

  • Cut Stems Correctly: Use clean, sharp floral shears to cut stems diagonally about 1 inch from the bottom. Avoid household scissors, as they pinch the stems and block water absorption.

  • Place and Space: Place the freshly cut stems into the prepared water immediately, ensuring enough space in each container to allow the flowers to bloom properly.

Step 4: Hydrate and Maintain

  • Hydration Time: After the initial 4-hour hydration period, remove protective packaging, strip additional leaves and thorns (if applicable).

  • Re-cut and Space: Give your flowers another fresh cut and place them in your prepared buckets. You may need to spread your stems out into more buckets to give them even more room to bloom. It is important not to overcrowd your buckets. Allow your flowers to continue to hydrate for another 8 hours before beginning the design process.

  • Store in a Cool Place: Keep flowers in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight, drafts, and heat. Avoid placing them in a refrigerator, as this can harm flowers.

  • Monitor Water Levels: Flowers drink heavily upon arrival, so check frequently to ensure all stems are always submerged. If the water drops below the stems, refill immediately and recut them before placing them back in the container.

Step 5: Time to Design

  • Ready to Arrange: After completing the hydration and processing steps above, your flowers are now ready for design.

  • Recut and Maintain: As you design, make sure to recut the stems and maintain water levels.

  • Refresh Regularly: Change water daily and recut stems every 24-48 hours to keep flowers fresh.

Special Notes for Gerberas

  • Gerberas are highly sensitive to stem blockages and bacterial buildup. To prevent this, place stems in shallow water and monitor levels closely. For optimal support and hydration, use a chicken wire grid across the top of your bucket to dangle the stems without letting them rest on the bottom. Alternatively, create a taped grid over your bucket or vase.

Tips from Our Experts

  • Always keep flower buds above the bucket or vase rim to prevent your blooms from bruising.

  • Warm environments speed up blooming, while cooler areas slow it down. Adjust storage as needed, but always avoid direct sunlight and excessive heat.

  • Use a floral finishing spray after arranging blooms to help them last longer.

At Last

Christine and Daniel met a little over 9 years ago, introduced by a mutual friend. The bride was in college, the groom working for a home remodeling company. The relationship grew and the bride was set on completing her nursing degree. While the couple never lost sight there long term plan to get married there were a couple forks in the road, the births of their two beautiful boys. So as life happened and priorities changed Christine saw her dream of a big Italian wedding start to fade. But on the night of her graduation party, Daniel proposed, and she said yes. She started her nursing career with long hours and trying to save money for a house, and again the wedding plans were pushed aside. But in the fall of 2018 the decision to look for a venue was made, choosing The Bell Event Centre in downtown Cincinnati. The choice was easy as this former Catholic Church was where Christine's grandfather attended school and mass. Nearly everything was DIY in an effort to keep costs down; from the brides veil to the wedding invitations and wedding signs. The venue was large and Christine wanted the flowers to be amazing, she just had no idea what the cost would be for what she wanted. So we looked a Fifty Flowers on line, read the reviews, watched many YouTube videos on flower arranging and took the plunge. While it was a lot of work, the time spent with the bridesmaids, family and friends putting all the bouquets and arrangements together was one of best pre-wedding events. The flowers were amazing and we are so thankful for the standards and integrity that 50 flowers has set.

Dreaming of Flowers

While planning my wedding, I decided to not only do my own flower arrangements, but also attempt to grow some of my own flowers. I decided to grow dahlias as they're one of my favorite flowers and zinnias (because they're easy to grow). I also ordered roses and eucalyptus from fifty flowers and hydrangea from Costco (sorry fifty flowers, they had a better price). Then I also went to the grocery store and got a few more filler flowers for the bouquets. On the day of the wedding, myself and my bridesmaids worked on flowers while enjoying brunch, mimosas, and in between getting our hair and makeup done. The end results was a collective but individual group of bouquets and centerpieces. I was so pleased with how everything turned out and would absolutely use fifty flowers again - I just need an excuse :)

The customer service at fifty flowers was wonderful! I initially ordered all the flowers to be delivered 3 days prior to my wedding, but they called to let me know they recommended 2 days for the garden roses. Once the shipments arrived, I received calls and/or emails to ensure everything was in place. It was a pleasure working with them.
