Caring for Your Flowers

Our flowers are shipped fresh directly from our farms to your doorstep. When you first open the box, your flowers might appear "sleepy" or "thirsty," which is completely normal. These flowers have just completed an international journey and need water. Following the important care and preparation steps below will help rehydrate them and ensure they last as long as possible.

Flower Care Steps – From Arrival to Arrangement

Step 1: Unpack and Inspect

  • Unpack and Inspect: Cut any straps to remove flowers from the box, but leave their protective packaging and rubber bands on for the first 4 hours of hydration. As you unpack, check your blooms for any visible concerns.

  • Process Immediately: Begin the steps below immediately upon opening the box to ensure your flowers rehydrate and recover from their journey.

Step 2: Prepare the Containers

  • Choose Clean Buckets or Vases: Ensure your containers are clean and sanitized to remove soap residue, bacteria, and dirt, which can shorten flower life.

  • Fill Containers: Add at least 4 inches of cool, fresh water, and mix in flower food if available.

Step 3: Trim and Place in Water

  • Remove Foliage Below the Waterline: Strip leaves that will fall below the waterline to prevent mold or bacteria growth.

  • Cut Stems Correctly: Use clean, sharp floral shears to cut stems diagonally about 1 inch from the bottom. Avoid household scissors, as they pinch the stems and block water absorption.

  • Place and Space: Place the freshly cut stems into the prepared water immediately, ensuring enough space in each container to allow the flowers to bloom properly.

Step 4: Hydrate and Maintain

  • Hydration Time: Allow flowers at least 4 hours to hydrate, though 8 to 12 hours is ideal. After hydrating, remove any protective packaging, rubber bands, and guard petals, if present (outer layers that may look bruised or brown).

  • Store in a Cool Place: Keep flowers in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight, drafts, and heat. Avoid placing them in a refrigerator, as this can harm flowers.

  • Monitor Water Levels: Flowers drink heavily upon arrival, so check frequently to ensure all stems are always submerged. If the water drops below the stems, refill immediately and recut them before placing them back in the container.

Step 5: Time to Design

  • Ready to Arrange: After completing the hydration and processing steps above, your flowers are now ready for design.

  • Recut and Maintain: As you design, make sure to recut the stems and maintain water levels.

  • Refresh Regularly: Change water daily and recut stems every 24-48 hours to keep flowers fresh.

Tips from Our Experts

  • Always keep flower buds above the bucket or vase rim to prevent your blooms from bruising.

  • Warm environments speed up blooming, while cooler areas slow it down. Adjust storage as needed, but always avoid direct sunlight and excessive heat.

  • Use a floral finishing spray after arranging blooms to help them last longer.

Precautions

  • Tinted Flowers: Tinted roses may release color into the water, which is perfectly normal. To keep the water clear and clean, be sure to change it regularly. Tinted water can also stain surfaces, so be cautious. The dye may transfer to skin or clothing, so we recommend wearing gloves while handling. For added protection, especially with clothing like a white wedding dress, wrap the stems to prevent dye from transferring.

  • Thorns: Flowers with thorns require extra care. Wear gloves when handling them, and consider using a thorn stripping tool for added ease and safety.

Summer Mountain Wedding

I was going for glamorous wildflower bouquets. My colors were lavender, pink, black and white. I loved the flowers and they went so well all together, the only complaints I had were that I received the wrong color hydrangeas, which they refunded me for and that there weren't many bloomed scabiosas that came with the package. I have to say though, the customer service was fast, friendly and knowledgeable. I ordered the extra roses and greenery and I'm glad I did. I used the roses, eucalyptus, listhanus, anemones, and scabiosas for the bouquets. I ended up giving my bouquet to the longest married couple instead of doing a bouquet toss. For the center pieces I used hydrangeas, roses and listhanus. I had enough for my bridal bouquet, six bridesmaids, two mother's bouquets, 13 centerpieces, and all the boutonnieres. They all came with enough time to open up a little before the wedding, we managed to get all the flowers done two days before. I enlisted the help of my mom, aunt, cousin and 3 of my bridesmaids to help put it all together and it only took a couple hours once we figured out what would work together.

Tropical Wedding Reception

My husband and I eloped in Hawaii over the summer, and decided to have a reception when we returned. We chose to make centerpieces with the Pink Ice Proteas as they are so exotic! Everyone took the centerpieces home. They were a big hit. I would definitely order these flowers, or any other from Fifty Flowers. My experience with this company was amazing. They really know what they are talking about. I would definitely follow their recommendations regarding how soon to order flowers before your reception, flower care instructions, etc.

Thank you!

Beautiful Roses and Petals!

I came across the fresh rose petals at FiftyFlowers a couple of months ago and thought how beautiful it would be to add this to my own wedding decor. My wedding colors were black & white damask with yellow accents.

I originally ordered the Butter Yellow Rose Petals, and I must say I was so impressed at how fresh and lush the petals arrived. They were literally the largest rose petals I had ever seen. But the color was more Ivory, and I really wanted the yellow accents! So, I called customer service, and they took care of me, sending me a replacement order of 200 yellow roses. They were gorgeous and easy to de-petal. The tables were full of petals and candles and the guests are still talking about how beautiful everything looked.

Since then I have used FiftyFlowers.com over and over because I was so pleased. It feels great knowing they care so much! I always receive a confirmation call (not just an email, but a live phone call) to make sure the order is correct and the delivery information is correct.

They send an email the morning of to let me know my order is out for delivery which is great because even if I am at work I know they are in route.

I would recommend this to every bride out there!! You can't find petals more beautiful!! #LOVE #LOVE #LOVE
