Caring for Your Hydrangea

Our flowers are shipped fresh directly from our farms to your doorstep. When you first open the box, your flowers might appear "sleepy" or "thirsty," which is completely normal. These flowers have just completed an international journey and need water. Following the important care and preparation steps below will help rehydrate them and ensure they last as long as possible.

Flower Care Steps – From Arrival to Arrangement

Step 1: Unpack and Inspect

  • Unpack and Inspect: Cut any straps to remove flowers from the box, but leave their protective packaging on for the first 4 hours of hydration. As you unpack, check your blooms for any visible concerns.

  • Process Immediately: Begin the steps below immediately upon opening the box to ensure your flowers rehydrate and recover from their journey.

Step 2: Prepare the Containers

  • Choose Clean Buckets or Vases: Ensure your containers are clean and sanitized to remove soap residue, bacteria, and dirt, which can shorten flower life.

  • Fill Containers: Add at least 4 inches of cool, fresh water, and mix in flower food if available.

Step 3: Trim and Place in Water

  • Remove Foliage Below the Waterline: Strip leaves that will fall below the waterline to prevent mold or bacteria growth.

  • Cut Stems Correctly: Use clean, sharp floral shears to cut stems diagonally about 1 inch from the bottom. Avoid household scissors, as they pinch the stems and block water absorption.

  • Place and Space: Place the freshly cut stems into the prepared water immediately, ensuring enough space in each container to allow the flowers to bloom properly.

Step 4: Hydrate and Maintain

  • Hydration Time: Allow flowers at least 4 hours to hydrate, though 8 to 12 hours is ideal. After hydrating, remove protective packaging and guard petals (outer layers that may look bruised or brown).

  • Store in a Cool Place: Keep flowers in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight, drafts, and heat. Avoid placing them in a refrigerator, as this can harm flowers.

  • Monitor Water Levels: Flowers drink heavily upon arrival, so check frequently to ensure all stems are always submerged. If the water drops below the stems, refill immediately and recut them before placing them back in the container.

Step 5: Time to Design

  • Ready to Arrange: After completing the hydration and processing steps above, your flowers are now ready for design.

  • Recut and Maintain: As you design, make sure to recut the stems and maintain water levels.

  • Refresh Regularly: Change water daily and recut stems every 24-48 hours to keep flowers fresh.

Tips from Our Experts

  • Always keep flower buds above the bucket or vase rim to prevent your blooms from bruising.

  • Warm environments speed up blooming, while cooler areas slow it down. Adjust storage as needed, but always avoid direct sunlight and excessive heat.

  • Use a floral finishing spray after arranging blooms to help them last longer.

The hydrangeas were used as the main flower for the bridal bouquet made by Megan, the bride. They were also used for two ceremony arrangements. Pam made these arrangements by combining with some of the large Ecuador roses in peach and some eucalyptus...and after drying, wow, still stunning! We used the balance of them to break off sections to just lay on tables. So beautiful

These Hydrangeas are truly "Giant". One bloom was used for each of the bridesmaids bouquets with other filler flowers added. They arrived a little thirsty but after overnight hydration, they were healthy and hearty. They provided the perfect antique hue that I was hoping to achieve. I also used them for centerpieces at the table for the wedding guests and in several arrangements surrounding the cake and bridal table. The size will amaze you. They don't require other flowers to fill a vase, but work well with white, cream, pink and greens. I highly recommend these lovely hydrangeas

Modern Classic Richmond Wedding

I knew from the beginning that I wanted to DIY my flowers. For starters I'm the pickiest person when it comes to aesthetic, and at least if its messed up I only have myself to blame; secondly I knew that I wanted lush, big, bouquets and paying for a florist would be much to expensive. The ordering process was a breeze; efficient, effective, and I had no worries about whether or not the right flowers would show up/if they would be on time. When they showed up in groups a few days before the wedding, I set them up exactly as I was told, and they all opened up beautifully, and were exactly like what I expected to receive.

My bridesmaids and I set about putting together ALL of the arrangements on the Friday before the wedding; all in all a smooth process. Having so many hands on deck was surprisingly a blessing. I was able to dictate clearly what it was I wanted them to do, and having them all do their own bouquet expedited the process immensely! We did all 8 bridesmaids bouquets, my bouquet, 11 boutonnieres, and 16 centerpieces that doubled as Aisle decor.

Unfortunately the venue's AC was broken Friday, and it was chalked up to the unit just not being scheduled to be on. We didn't find out until about 1 hour before the ceremony that it was in fact broken... so all 36 arrangements and the leftovers were both made, and left, in an 80 degree room for about 24 hours. The proteas (my favorite flower on the planet) held up beautifully, as did the thistle and all of the greenery. The Anemones and Veronica were definitely dead about 20 minutes into the ceremony, and the garden roses were looking a little brown... so that was a bummer. To be honest, though.... I did know going into it that A) you should try with all of your might to do boutonnieres the day OF... not the day before and B) Veronica and Anemone were not going to hold up all day anyway (it was forecasted to be about 98 degrees that day).

At the end of the day though, they looked beautiful and I loved the whole experience. It was quicker and easier than a lot of people made it out to be, and I think it was well worth the prep time/planning and organizing to get exactly what I wanted (and a lot of it) for WAY cheaper than a traditional florist!

Beautiful Sunflowers

I bought the Sunny Days Table Centerpieces and I used them for my bridesmaids flowers, as well as some extras around the reception and they were amazing. I also got the Tickle Me Yellow Flower Centerpieces for each table. Everyone said how wonderful they were. I also got the sunflower box of 3 and I loved my flowers so much! I would def. use FiftyFlowers again! :)

Beautiful Flowers

The giant antique green hydrangeas were spectacular! I choose them to go with pink garden roses and off white spray roses for my wedding and they were wonderful. Giant is not an exaggeration, the blooms were so big it took three 5 gallon buckets to hold them all and I could have used one more. They also looked exactly like the picture. They were delivered on time and I even got a call from customer service to be sure! I would definitely order from Fifty Flowers again!
