Caring for Your Gladiolus

Our flowers are shipped fresh directly from our farms to your doorstep. When you first open the box, your flowers might appear "sleepy" or "thirsty," which is completely normal. These flowers have just completed an international journey and need water. Following the important care and preparation steps below will help rehydrate them and ensure they last as long as possible.

Flower Care Steps – From Arrival to Arrangement

Step 1: Unpack and Inspect

  • Unpack and Inspect: Cut any straps to remove flowers from the box, but leave their protective packaging on for the first 4 hours of hydration. As you unpack, check your blooms for any visible concerns.

  • Process Immediately: Begin the steps below immediately upon opening the box to ensure your flowers rehydrate and recover from their journey. Again, don’t worry if they appear sleepy or thirsty—they will perk up beautifully with proper care.

Step 2: Prepare the Containers

  • Choose Clean Buckets or Vases: Ensure your containers are clean and sanitized to remove soap residue, bacteria, and dirt, which can shorten flower life.

  • Fill Containers: Add at least 4 inches of cool, fresh water, and mix in flower food if available.

Step 3: Trim and Place in Water

  • Remove Foliage Below the Waterline: Strip leaves that will fall below the waterline to prevent mold or bacteria growth.

  • Cut Stems Correctly: Use clean, sharp floral shears to cut stems diagonally about 1 inch from the bottom. Avoid household scissors, as they pinch the stems and block water absorption.

  • Place and Space: Place the freshly cut stems into the prepared water immediately, ensuring enough space in each container to allow the flowers to bloom properly.

Step 4: Hydrate and Maintain

  • Hydration Time: After the initial 4-hour hydration period, remove protective packaging, strip additional leaves and thorns (if applicable).

  • Re-cut and Space: Give your flowers another fresh cut and place them in your prepared buckets. You may need to spread your stems out into more buckets to give them even more room to bloom. It is important not to overcrowd your buckets. Allow your flowers to continue to hydrate for another 8 hours before beginning the design process.

  • Store in a Cool Place: Keep flowers in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight, drafts, and heat. Avoid placing them in a refrigerator, as this can harm flowers.

  • Monitor Water Levels: Flowers drink heavily upon arrival, so check frequently to ensure all stems are always submerged. If the water drops below the stems, refill immediately and recut them before placing them back in the container.

Step 5: Time to Design

  • Ready to Arrange: After completing the hydration and processing steps above, your flowers are now ready for design.

  • Recut and Maintain: As you design, make sure to recut the stems and maintain water levels.

  • Refresh Regularly: Change water daily and recut stems every 24-48 hours to keep flowers fresh.

Tips from Our Experts

  • Always keep flower buds above the bucket or vase rim to prevent your blooms from bruising.

  • Warm environments speed up blooming, while cooler areas slow it down. Adjust storage as needed, but always avoid direct sunlight and excessive heat.

  • Use a floral finishing spray after arranging blooms to help them last longer.

The flowers looked great, exactly what I was expecting. They were strong and sturdy and I think the amount we got for the price was great!

It Takes A Village

I agonized over flowers for months. My Pinterest board was growing out of control. I wanted something classy and beautiful and seasonal, but I realized quickly that my budget would not go very far with florists in NYC. Instead, I hired a florist to make the personal flowers (3 bouquets and a number of bouts and corsages) and took a deep breath and ordered the rest through FiftyFlowers. I wasn't sure how much to buy, so I used the Live Chat function and was able to have a long call with Violet, who helped me put together an order. I thought about it for a few days, made a few tweaks, and then ordered.

Customer service was great. One box of textured paper mache filler was held up at customs, so they sent another box the next day. We had the flowers sent to the church, where we had tons of buckets and floral shears waiting, and received them on Wednesday and Thursday morning. Stripping everything and getting it into buckets took a long time with just 1-2 people working, but it was really the bulk of the work for us. On Friday, we had our rehearsal at the church and also arranged the flowers in quart and pint sized mason jars. It was both sides of the family and some friends working together - a lot of people. We made a few prototypes but just let everyone be creative so they'd all turn out a bit different. (Afterwards we went through and fixed some of the goofy looking ones - have a designated "quality control team" with good design sense to do this for you!) Another pro tip: get a huge plastic dropcloth and do your arranging on top of it. Afterwards, just roll it up and you can avoid having to pick up all the leaves and stems and flower detritus.

Overall we made over 60 arrangements: 2 per table for 18 tables, plus a bunch more for cocktail tables, the bars, sweetheart table, the bathrooms, and the altar. I also used wire and tape to make the eucalyptus wreath for our dog. On Saturday, everything still looked great. The only major issue was the creamy white dahlias - my aunt went through Saturday morning and pulled the ones that were looking sad. Otherwise I was pretty thrilled with how it all turned out, and at a quarter of the cost of what a local florist would have wanted for this volume. If you are hardworking, organized, and a little crafty or creative, you can absolutely do this. But, we made this our only DIY so we could enjoy ourselves and not be stressed out. It was a lot of work, but because we did it together, it was also a lot of fun. Even our six year-old ring bearer could help!
